Hot springs have long been held as a perfect destination for relaxation and recuperation. Idaho contains more hot springs for soaking than any other state in the country, both natural hot springs as well as resorts. One of the great perks of Idaho City is that we are close to some of the best hot springs in the state.
Here is an overview of what to expect if you visit one of the hot springs near Idaho City.
Arguably one of the best hot spring resorts in Idaho, The Springs is a favorite attraction among locals and visitors alike.
This mountain spa features an idyllic setting right off of the picturesque Ponderosa Pine Scenic Route, just a mile outside of Idaho City. The property is split into two parts: The Main Area, with a communal pool, and the Private Soak areas. Each area requires its own reservation, so be sure to reserve for both areas. The location also features a sauna.
Poolside servers are available during your scheduled soaking time as well as a limited menu of food, beer, and wine. While outside food is prohibited, there is a serene picnic area right outside of the spa. The Springs also implements temperature control on especially hot days, allowing the water to be the perfect temperature to beat the heat. Free water is provided at poolside locations.
While there are designated family times on the weekends, the resort is mainly open for guests 18 and older.
The Pine Flats Hot Springs is a popular natural hot spring comprising three separate pools, the most notable of which is a geothermal waterfall which cascades down into a rock walled pool. The waterfall pool is the hottest of the three, while the other two vary in temperature depending upon a number of factors.
The hot springs are accessible by a short trail, the trailhead for which begins in the Pine Flats campground. While parking is available, there is a small fee required. The hike to the waterfall is steep with lots of loose rock, so shoes are highly recommended.
Pine Flats is a family friendly location so bathing suits are required. Dogs are allowed in the area if leashed, but are not allowed in the pools.
Located at the north bank of the South Fork of the Payette River, Kirkham Hot Springs is an all-natural, family-friendly hot spring that is incredibly popular with travelers during the warmer months. While the springs themselves are free, there is a small fee to park your vehicle in the parking lot.
Kirkham Hot Springs features both waterfalls and rock walled pools. The source for the springs is about 120 degrees Fahrenheit, although the waterfalls usually average between 95 and 110 degrees. The pools themselves are shallower, many times being around ankle-deep. To reach the springs, you can follow an easy trail with staircases, making for easy access.
Pets are allowed, so long as they are leashed at all times.
