When you visit Idaho City, not only do you get to experience a wonderful small town community in a historic setting, you also get to experience awesome sights in the Boise National Forest. Taking advantage of the nearby hiking trails is a great opportunity to fully experience the beauty of the forested Rocky Mountains.
We’ve put together a list below of some nearby popular trails, but keep in mind that this list is in no way comprehensive of the hiking opportunities available.
Charcoal Gulch is a well-maintained trail that begins within walking distance of our establishment. With a steady incline throughout, as well as numerous pockets of shade, this trail makes for an enjoyable experience.
Guests can enjoy this trail year-round, as it not only is perfect for mountain biking and hiking in the warmer months but also makes for a great snowshoeing experience in the colder seasons.
Typically, the trail offers about a 2 hour hiking experience. What’s more, the end of the Charcoal Gulch Trail connects to a series of other hiking paths, allowing you to lengthen your hike if you want.
This trail is not only popular for hikers but also mountain bikers and birdwatchers. Once you see it, it’s not hard to see why.
The trail runs parallel along the Crooked River, as the name suggests. Running through a narrow valley and along a steep ridge, you find plenty of photogenic spots along the way. With a notable elevation gain and multiple river crossings, this route is perfect for those looking for a moderately difficult hike.
Crooked River Trail is also a dog-friendly trail, allowing you to bring your furry family members along with you in the great outdoors. In some places, your pet is permitted to roam unleashed.
Jennie Lake Trail remains one of the more popular routes in the area, due to the fact that it provides for one of the best payoffs for traversing this trail: a majestic yet tranquil area of Jennie Lake. Not only is the lake a great spot for reflection, but it also offers some great fishing opportunities for would-be anglers.
The trail itself has a constant gradual incline as it runs next to a creek nearly the entire length of the route. The creek can make for some excellent resting spots on your journey. Note that the water does need to be treated before you can drink it.
Dogs are allowed on this path, as long as they are leashed. Also take note that on particularly windy days, there have been reports of trees falling along or on the path.
